API 5L PSL1 and PSL2 pipe differences
All API 5L pipe grades (welded and seamless) have two specification levels: the PSL1 and the PSL2. Both are different in terms of chemical composition, manufacturing process, tensile strength, heat treatment, test records, traceability, etc.
API 5L pipes PSL2 level are higher than PSL1
PSL stands for Product Specification Level. The product specification level of a tube can be PSL1 and PSL2, so we could also state that the standard or quality standard is divided into PSL1 and PSL2. The quality of the PSL2 is higher than that of the PSL1, not only in terms of inspection standards, but also differ in their chemical properties and standards for mechanical resistance. Therefore, when ordering an API 5L pipe, its size, the general degree of specification, and the level of product specification, either PSL1 or PSL2, must be clearly indicated.
Keep in mind that PSL2 is more restrictive than PSL1 in chemical composition, mechanical strength, non-destructive inspection, and impact testing.
Differences in impact tests for PSL1 and PSL2
API 5L PSL1 steel pipe must not undergo the impact test.
For API 5L PSL2 steel pipe, with the exception of Grade X80, all API 5L pipe grades need to go through an impact test at a temperature of 0 ℃. The average value of AKv should be: longitudinal direction ≥41J, transverse direction ≥27J.
For API 5L PSL2 Grade X80 pipe, at 0 ℃ for all sizes, the AKv value for the impact test must be: longitudinal direction ≥101J, transverse direction ≥68J.
Differences in hydrostatic tests for API 5L PSL1 and PSL2 pipe
For the API 5L PSL2 pipe, the hydrostatic test must be performed in each section of the tube, and according to the specifications of the API regulations, the non-destructive test cannot replace the hydrostatic test. This is a huge difference between the Chinese standard for pipes and the standard or API 5L standard. For PSL1, non-destructive testing is not required, while PSL2 must undergo non-destructive testing for each section of the pipe.
Differences in chemical composition for API 5L PSL1 and PSL2 pipe
The chemical composition and mechanical strength is also different between the API 5L PSL1 pipe and the PSL2 pipe. For more detailed specifications, see the information below. API 5L PSL2 has restrictions on the maximum carbon content, where the carbon concentration can be greater than 0.12%, and equal to or less than 0.12%. Different levels of CEQ (Carbon Equivalence) will apply. For the PSL2 pipe, the tensile strength withstands maximum levels. For more information, review sections 9.2 and 9.3 of API 5L.
