What kind of pipes do I need for my project?
If you want to make repairs and plumbing installations for yourself, you need to know how to recognize the types of pipes that exist. This will also help you to know which tubes are inside your home and thus be able to apply the most appropriate technique.
Among the most common are copper pipes, steel pipes, PVC pipes, among others. However, in old houses, you may find other types of pipes. For example, in those homes built before 1960, the most commonly used pipes were galvanized steel or cast iron.
We share the main characteristics of each type of tube.
Copper pipes
Because copper pipes are very resistant to corrosion, they are commonly used in water pipes. They cost a little more than other tubes, but they are much more durable. There are two types of copper pipes:
Rigid copper pipes: Rigid copper pipes are divided into three types. Type M is the thinnest, but strong enough to be used in homes. Types L and K are slightly larger, and are used outdoors and drainage systems.
Flexible copper pipes: Flexible copper pipes are commonly applied in dishwashers, refrigerators and other items that need a water supply. They are very easy to handle, but if they are damaged, you must cut the part and replace it. This type of tube can be joined using welding or compression fittings.
Steel tubes
Carbon steel tubes are very strong and resistant. They are divided into two types, seamless tubes and seamless tubes. However, we recommend you pay more attention at the time of identification, since if it is galvanized steel pipes, you will have to replace them instead of repairing them. These types of pipes were used in old homes.
PVC pipes
PVC pipes are made of polyvinyl chloride and are usually white or cream. They are the most used for drainage pipes. They are strong and very resistant to chemical components.
Cast iron pipes
Before 1960, these tubes were the most applied in vertical drains, ventilation ducts and sometimes in horizontal drainage pipes. Cast iron is durable, but it can oxidize over time. We recommend replacing this type of pipes.
